The Chinese envoy calls for continued international support for Somalia

China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zhang Jun on Monday called for continued international support for Somalia's efforts to achieve political stability, security transition and economic and social reconstruction.

At a Security Council meeting on Somalia, Zhang said that the interest and support of the United Nations and the international community for Somalia should not decline, because 2024 will be crucial for the country's political process, security transition and national reconstruction.

Zhang said that China supports all parties in Somalia in resolving their differences through dialogue and consultation and advancing the political transition process.

He said, “It should be noted that choosing the political system and development path is an internal matter for Somalia. The international community must adhere to the Somali-led and Somali-owned principle and avoid imposing a governance model from outside.”

Regarding the security transformation in Somalia, Zhang said that the international community should support the Somali federal government in consolidating the achievements in combating terrorism and maintaining stability in the previous stage.

He added that it is necessary to support the Somali security sector in building its capacity to bear greater responsibility for security, noting that there is also a need to support economic and social reconstruction in Somalia.
