The conclusion of the reconciliation conference in Baidoa, and the parties reached an agreement
Last night, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, concluded the second phase of the reconciliation conference in Baidoa, the capital of the interim South West State, and all problems were resolved.
The parties participating in the reconciliation conference in Baidoa managed to overcome differences and reach an agreement regarding the presidential parliamentary elections in the state so that conflicts would not harm the country.
According to the closing statement issued by the conference, it was agreed that the period between November 2023 and December 2023 will be the selection of members of the regional parliament. It was also agreed that elections for the presidency of Parliament and the president of the state will be held in January 2024.
The Chairman of the Reconciliation Committee, the President of Southwest State and the opposition politicians agreed that the Somali government's Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation would implement the agreement.
This agreement is expected to end a dispute between the President of Southwest State, Abdulaziz Laftagrin, and his opponents over the issue of elections in the state, which caused armed confrontations in Baidoa, and it seems that the opposition has waived its objection to a general extension of Laftagrin's term.
