Somali President meets Undersecretary of the US Treasury
President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud received Brian Nelson, Undersecretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Affairs at the US Treasury Department. Nelson indicated that he met his counterparts during his visit to Somalia and Kenya to deepen their areas of cooperation while expanding their partnership to better meet common challenges and opportunities before them. Nelson stated that Africa will shape the future of the global economy and that the US Treasury Department is committed to deepening its financial ties and relationships across the continent.
The main focus of his meetings in Mogadishu and Nairobi was to discuss how to strengthen their partnership to combat terrorist financing in the region.
In his meetings with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, three main topics were discussed: progress in building capacity to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, progress in advancing critical reforms that will allow Somalia to allocate revenue to developing its economy rather than servicing debt, and a new strategy from the Treasury Department on Addressing the reduction of financial risks.
