The Somali capital, Mogadishu, is currently witnessing extensive preparations and arrangements amid tight security, and the closure of roads, entrances and exits to the capital, in preparation for the inauguration of the new president, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, scheduled for Thursday, with wide Arab and international participation.

Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud was elected as the new president of Somalia on May 15, after elections in which only the country's representatives voted.

As part of Mogadishu's preparations for the inauguration of the new president, Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble announced tightening security measures and imposing a general closure on the capital.

"I respectfully ask the residents of Mogadishu to be patient with the capital's roads closed, traffic and public movement disrupted from 10 pm today until 5 pm Thursday, according to local time, with international leaders and delegates arriving in the country for the ceremony," Roble said, in a video recording.

The Somali official instructed the local police, asking them to prepare ambulances, to transport people to medical facilities for emergency cases in light of the comprehensive closure.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled to be organized at the Somali Air Force base inside Mogadishu airport, with an international and Arab presence, while delegations from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and the League of Arab States arrived to participate.

It is expected that the rest of the Arab delegations will arrive in addition to the presence of heads of Western diplomatic missions in Mogadishu.

The new Somali President, Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, faces many challenges. Most notably, fighting the bloody rebellion in his country, which he referred to in recently broadcast statements, saying that the restoration of security depends on reconciliation with other Somali leaders.
