Somalia announces its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council
The Somali federal government has officially announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the period 2025-2026. According to diplomatic sources, the seat that Somalia is seeking is an African seat and is specifically allocated to a country located in East Africa.
On October 21, the Somali government asked the African Union to approve its nomination for a non-permanent seat in the Security Council, out of its keenness to represent Africa in the Council.
The Somali mission to the United Nations expressed in a statement its commitment to be a leader in promoting the African peace and security agenda within the Security Council. This seat, one of 5 non-permanent seats, is scheduled to be elected in mid-2024 during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
