The head of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, Mahmoud Maalim Abdullahi, announced that floods resulting from heavy rains and rising water levels of the Juba and Shabelle rivers led to the death of 120 people, and pointed out that Bay, Gedo and lower Juba governorates were the most affected.

“In these floods, we lost 120 people across the country, especially in Bay, Gedo and Lower Juba governorates. This includes many who died in a boat capsizing while trying to escape from Al-Shabaab,” Abdullah said.

He also explained the difficulty of aid reaching some areas, as the floods led to the closure of many airports while the challenges associated with the floods continue in many cities within Hiran Governorate, especially the cities of Beledweyne Bouluberti and Jallaqsi.

On Thursday, the World Food Program warned of the worsening impact of devastating floods on food insecurity in East Africa, and stated that Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya are the countries most affected by this crisis, and Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi and Uganda also face major challenges.
